Today is August 9. On this day in 1936, Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the Olympic Games in Berlin. His success embarrassed Hitler and the Nazi Party, who had hoped to use the games to demonstrate to the world the superiority of Aryan athletes. Instead, Owens became an international star, winning four golds, including the 100-meter sprint. Another African-American won silver in the 100-m--that's him in front of Jesse on the podium. Name that silver medalist!
