Today is October 12. On this day in 1940, one of the greatest cowboy actors of all time died when he drove his sportscar into a ditch, causing a heavy suitcase (which may or may not have been filled with jewels at the time) to hit him in the back of the head, killing him instantly. The plaque shown here is located at the site of his death, and reads, "In memory of __________, whose spirit left his body on this spot and whose characterization and portrayals in life served to better fix memories of the Old West in the minds of living men."
